DIY Faux Crank Table

DIY Crank Table

Have you ever heard of a crank table before? I absolutely love these! Unfortunately these tables can run you around $20k for an antique one! That is way way out of my budget! Since there was no way I would be buying one of these tables anytime soon, not unless I won powerball, I decided I would make my own version.  Originally I was going to make a plumbers pipe table (like the plumbers pipe bench I made) for the living room makeover but then I came across the crank desk below and that was it, I was drooling over it and I knew I could make my own DIY Faux Crank Table!

Here is my inspiration table photo via shop.retro.net

I used 4 x 6 posts for the base, plumbers pipe and flanges between the base and the top, conduit pipe across the front with an antique wheel that I painted red and a handle from a meat grinder that I never use.

Per the diagram, the base is made up of two 16″ feet, one 3′ section between the feet and two 22″ legs, these were all attached using L brackets anywhere a 90 degree angle formed and a flat bracket on the outer sides of the legs. Next I attached flanges on the top of each leg with a 8″ section of plumbers pipe and another flange. The top was attached to the top flanges. The base was spray painted in Rust-Oleum’s Metallic Soft Iron. The top was stained with watered down paint (a combination of white and brown paint).

Once the base and top were done I added a section of conduit pipe across the front then attached the antique wheel that I spray painted in Rust-Oleum Red and a meat grinder handle.  I didn’t make my table as big as the inspiration desk, I wanted it to fit on a specific wall in my living room.  I would definitely make this table much bigger if I were going to use it as a desk.

This table is very heavy due to the 4 x 6 base, however I’m sure it is much lighter then a real antique which is made of metal.

It fits the space perfectly for the farmhouse industrial look I was going  for in the living room makeover.  I had most of the material already at my home or at my neighbors (I love shopping her basement!) however I did price the material out at my local hardware store to get an idea on the cost for this project, including the antique handle (found on etsy for 9.00) the approximate cost for this project is $70.00. If this is your style give it a try and make your own DIY Faux Crank Table!
